Senninbari (Thousand-Stitch Belt)
“Senninbari” (literally “thousand-person stitches”) refers to a traditional form of prayer and talisman practiced widely in Japan up until World War II. In this custom, many women would each sew a single stitch with red thread into a piece of cloth, creating knots one by one. The completed cloth served as a protective charm.
This practice was rooted in folk beliefs and symbolized a collective prayer for the soldier’s safety and good fortune on the battlefield—known as buun chōkyū (continued military luck). The resulting item was believed to hold spiritual power through the strength of many people's wishes.

Repatriation (Hikiage)
Repatriation (Japanese: 引き揚げ, hikiage) refers to the return of Japanese civilians to mainland Japan following Japan’s surrender to the Allied forces on August 15, 1945, marking the end of World War II. This term specifically applies to those Japanese who had been living in Japan’s former colonies, occupied territories, or in Soviet-occupied areas of Japan.
These individuals are known as hikiagesha (repatriates). Their return became a significant postwar issue, and various support measures were enacted for them, including the Repatriates' Benefit Act and special grants under Japanese law.
