What is motivation, really? Do we even need it?

Hiroshi Morinaga has passed away.

I'm shocked.

Fashion designer Kunihiko Morinaga, founder of anrealage_official, shared the following message regarding the passing of his uncle, Hiroshi Morinaga:

On the Passing of My Uncle, Hiroshi Morinaga
For the first time in my life, I am serving as the chief mourner. My uncle, who was 30 years older than me, passed away suddenly in Yokohama's Isezaki-cho. His name was Hiroshi Morinaga, and he was 75 years old. The funeral will be held on April 24th (Thursday) at a temple in Tokyo.

Last night, his body was found in his home in Isezaki-cho. Several days had passed since his death. There was no identification on him, and the police reached out for assistance in confirming his identity, using the information from his regular café. My uncle passed away without anyone by his side. It was a death of solitude. Or rather, to be precise, it was a death of isolation. My uncle was never truly alone.

This message reflects the profound sorrow and love Kunihiko Morinaga feels for his uncle, offering insight into the complexity of grief and the depth of their relationship.

I was influenced by his books, his work, and the time we spent together.

Being with Morinaga-san reminded me of the feeling I had when I was with Kiyoshi Nagatomo.

I love coffee.
And I always manage to spill it on my white clothes.

Yesterday, even while eating curry, coffee left a stain on my white sweatshirt.

Expanding the world of the Life Map.

Getting support from Hiro-kun (currently living in Vietnam). That was the meeting.

From now on, I’ll have staff members join in here!

I decided to ask Miki-san for help.

The party on March 20th. To everyone who participated as VIPs:

We had a social gathering late into the night.

Actually, I made sure to adjust the energy of each and every one of you!

Did you manage to catch any fish?!

Started the day with a screenplay meeting. Every week, we exchange ideas, aligning with Saijo-san’s writing.

Saijo-san’s ensemble dramas are fascinating. Each individual’s life takes shape like a self-published book, unfolding in its own unique way.

This world is intriguing.

What is motivation, really? Is it truly necessary?

Perhaps we should choose to do things without consciously thinking about motivation.

So much learning!

Alan Watts "We As Organism" Easy Version

  1. What is ‘Self’? How Big is It?

Alan Watts says, "We think about ourselves way too small." For example, we see earthquakes or thunderstorms as things that happen outside of us, and when our stomach growls or we hiccup, we think of those as weird things that happen to us. But actually, all of these could be part of "us."

  1. Change the Angle, Change the World

Watts uses the example of a magnifying glass or a microscope to show how changing our perspective changes what we see. When we look at blood under a microscope, it seems like a battlefield of cells. But if we look at it from a bigger view, it’s part of a process that keeps us alive. The same goes for the problems and struggles in our lives—they might be part of something useful when we step back and look at them.

  1. Space and Time are Important Too

We’re here in the “now,” but there’s also “space” and “time” in the background. Stars and the universe exist because there’s space, and life changes because there’s time. So, it’s not just about the “here and now” but also about looking at the bigger picture.

  1. Life is a Rhythm of On and Off

Watts says, “Life is made of ‘on’ and ‘off’ pulses.” For example, flames are never constant, always flickering. And just like that, we’re constantly changing, even though it may look like we’re standing still. What we call “self” isn’t something fixed, it’s like flowing energy or a dance.

  1. Fighting is Part of Harmony?

In life, there are times when things don’t go well or we bump heads with others. But Watts says, “It’s all part of the rhythm of life.” Life is made of different speeds and motions that come together to create an amazing symphony of life.

Summary

Alan Watts encourages us to think about “What is self?” and “How are we connected to the world?” He teaches us that everything is connected. When we look beyond just the present moment and see life from a wider perspective, it becomes more beautiful and interesting!
