What do you recognize as 'noise' and what do you recognize as 'talk'?

The answer would depend on your "interest" and whether you are interested or not. 

If you are not interested in the conversation, it is just noise.

You can hear the conversation, but it won't enter your mind.

Therefore, it will not be engraved in your memory.

The ear identifies what is of interest to you and delivers it to the brain.

If you hear someone gossiping or badmouthing someone else, 

it means you are interested in the gossip or badmouthing.

There is a difference between a person who doesn't like gossip 

and a person who is not interested in gossip.

People who are not interested in it are just not interested in it.

For people who don't like to hear people talk bad about others 

it is just as much a part of the city's chatter. 

People who don't like bad words are sensitive to them.

Because the feeling of dislike is also one of "interest".

So why are we interested in it?

Because they feel threatened by swearing.

"If I were to be the one who was being maligned, I'm sure I'd be hurt."

You're afraid so that's why you're antenna is alert towards it. 

That frightened posture is like introducing yourself to others and saying, 

"I would be hurt if someone said something bad about me."

It is a prey for the perverts who want to get pleasure from hurting others by swearing.

They are always on the lookout for people who are willing to be hurt by their bad words.

They are always on the lookout for people who are afraid of swearing.

A little poke in the eye and they're in pain like their life is over.

There's no way they would leave such a great reactionary performer alone

The only people they don't swear at are

are the uninhibited type that doesn't make a big deal out of every single swear word.

If they say something bad about you, you'll just say, "What? Is that so? Lol, I'm sorry"

They becoming a boring person to deal with. 

Instead of standing around to avoid being bad-mouthed

Develop the habit of thinking that you won't be hurt by bad words.

Your life won't change even if others speak ill of you

Don't be frightened or interested in something you have no power to change

I accidentally spoke ill of someone, and 

I was furiously scolded by someone I respected.

 

After that

I stopped speaking ill about others.

I am really glad I chose that life.
