| Gozu Tenno asked him "please let me stay here for a night" but Gotan was mean and lied to him, turning him down saying, "We are poor, so we cannot put you up." Gozu Tenno was in trouble. As he had no choice, he continued walking and then came to Somin Shorai's house. He asked, "Please put me up" and the kind-hearted Somin, though he was poor said, "please come in, even though its not clean" and welcomed him in and gave Gozu Tenno chestnut rice to eat. The following day, as he was leaving the house, as his gratitude for letting him stay, Gozu Tenno gifted a jewel to Somin. This jewel is a jewel that will collect money if a kind-hearted person has it. | |
 After that, Gozu Tenno arrive at the Ryugu castle, and found a wife, and became a father of 8 princes. About 8 years later, he decided to return to the land where he as born. On the way, he stayed once again in Somin's house. The kind-hearted somin had not become an elder and a millionaire. Gotan was jealous of this and also tried to have Gozu Tenno stay at his house too, but since he was still mean, bad things happened to him, one after the other. On the other hand, Somin lived happily ever after. You see, Gozu Tenno was a god of chasing away bad things. Everyone from Somin's house/family would keep a piece of wood that said "somin shore" on them at all times, as Gozu Tenno had told them to. It's has long been said that that was their amulet to live happily ever ever. This wooden amulet is now part of the sacred shrine rope that is hung in the entrance of one's house to keep away bad things/people. | |
This story of Somin Shorai and Gotan remains in theShinpen Nihon Koten Bungaku Zensshu scrips and here it also says that Susano ono mikoto also stayed at Somin's house. With the opening of "Folklore station Somin", we quotes from scripts copied in 1620. I here, it says that Gozu Tenno stayed at Somin's house. But in many folklore stories, its said that Susano-ono mikoto and Gozu Tenno are one and the same. |
