Summary: Why Do Global Elites Cultivate 'Aesthetic Sense'?
– 'Art' and 'Science' in Management

by Shuu Yamaguchi

 1. Why is "Aesthetic Sense" necessary in business?

1. What is "Aesthetic Sense"?
"Aesthetic sense" doesn’t just refer to an appreciation of appearance or art; it encompasses "broad education, including philosophy" and "sharp sensitivity." For business professionals, having a high "aesthetic sense" means being able to grasp complex issues in a sensory and ethical way and making judgments with a wide perspective.

2. The "Good Judgment Standards" Brought by Aesthetic Sense
Business decisions can’t always be made through logic alone. In situations that require multi-faceted perspectives, ethics, and creativity, having a strong aesthetic sense helps to make flexible and appropriate decisions.

2. Three reasons why aesthetic sense is becoming more important.

1. We can no longer win with logic alone.

It’s impossible to calculate all the complex elements logically within a short period of time.

Appropriate intuition and sensory judgment become necessary.

Continuous engagement with philosophical questions, which often don’t have clear answers, hones sharp intuition.

2. The desire for self-actualization is increasing.
Happiness is no longer equated with "high income and material wealth"; instead, living authentically has become more important.

To create products or services that offer "self-expression" and "empathy" to customers and consumers, not only logical analysis but also creative sense is necessary.

3. Changes in systems (society and technology) are rapid, and rules are lagging behind.
As seen in issues like curation media, more cases are emerging where something legally gray becomes a social or ethical problem. In fields where the rules are not yet established, it’s necessary to have a standard to judge "What is justice?" and "How should ethics be?" Learning universal values and ethical perspectives from philosophy and art can be applied to business decisions.

3. Concrete methods to cultivate aesthetic sense

Appreciate Paintings
Looking at paintings in art museums enhances "observation skills." In business, the ability to observe "the market or the state of your team" greatly influences outcomes. Art workshops (such as exchanging thoughts on what one feels from a painting) train the ability to look at things from multiple angles.

Engage with Philosophy
Facing questions that have no answers, questioning common sense, and deepening the thought process becomes training. By thinking from the root, "Why is that?", one can flexibly respond to complex business problems and new ideas.

Read Literature
Through stories, you come to realize the "essence of things" and the "depth of human emotions." Famous short stories like The Gift of the Magi make you ponder "What is true happiness?" and "What is wisdom?" Such reading experiences enhance the quality of business decisions and communication.

Explore Poetry
Rediscover the power of words. Short poems, like Nakahara Chūya’s The Sadness of Filth, often use simple words to stir deep emotions in humans. This can be very helpful in presentations and speeches that appeal to people’s emotions.

 4. Conclusion

Aesthetic Sense Is Essential for Good Judgment

In business, success requires not just logic but also sensitivity, ethical awareness, and creative sense.

The Three Backgrounds in the Modern Age

  • Logic alone has limits.
  • The era emphasizes self-actualization.
  • Rapid social changes have left rule-making behind.

The Four Methods to Cultivate Aesthetic Sense

  • Appreciate Paintings (Improve observation skills)
  • Engage with Philosophy (Build thinking and moral standards)
  • Read Literature (Enhance the ability to capture the essence of things)
  • Explore Poetry (Enhance the power of words and emotionally engaging communication)

  • By comprehensively sharpening these aspects, you can make "aesthetic judgments" and "creative ideas" even in times of rapid change, leading to great success in business.
