House of Habsburg

The House of Habsburg (German: Haus Habsburg, Spanish: Casa de Habsburgo) is one of the most prominent and important dynasties in European history, also known as the House of Austria (German: Haus Österreich, Spanish: Casa de Austria)[1][2].

The name Habsburg comes from the Habsburg Castle, a fortress built in what is now Switzerland by Ratboto of the Kretgau in the 1020s. His grandson, Otto II, was the first to take the name of the fortress as his own, adding the title “Count of Habsburg” to it. In 1273, Rudolf of Habsburg, a seventh-generation descendant of Count Ratboto, was electedKing of Rome. With the extinction of the Bavarian House and victory over Bohemian King Ottakar II at the Battle of Marhfeld in 1278, the Habsburgs appointed their sons to the Austrian dukedom and moved the family's power base toVienna, where they would rule until 1918 under the name “House of Austria”.

The Habsburgs continued to occupy the throne of the Holy Roman Empire from 1440 until the male line died out in 1740, and from 1765 until its dissolution in 1806 after the death of Franz I. The Habsburg family produced kings of Bohemia,Hungary, Croatia, Spain, Portugal, Galicia and Lodomeria, and rulers of the Low Countries and the Italian principalities, as well as emperors of Austria and Austria-Hungary Galicia Emperor of Austria and Austria-Hungary, and one Mexican Emperor. In the mid-16th century, with the abdication of Charles V, the Habsburgs split into the Spanish and Austrian branches, ruling over separate territories, but the two branches maintained close ties and frequently intermarried.

The Habsburg family controls the Austrian branch of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Order of Saint George. The current head of the family is Karl von Habsburg.
