To You, Caught Between Opposing Desires:The Magic of “Growth” and “Contribution” That Moves Your Life Forward
We are always pressing the accelerator and the brake at the same time inside our own hearts.
“I want stability, but I want change.” “I want the comfort of being like everyone else, but I want to be a special self.”
Have you ever felt clouded over, or come to a standstill, caught between contradictory desires like these? In fact, this very conflict is proof that we are living as human beings. Today let’s unpack the true nature of these two dilemmas, and look at some hints for stepping out of them and moving through life more lightly.
1. The loop between “I want stability” and “I want change”
You can’t move because you’re on a seesaw between anxiety and boredom
Somewhere inside, we all wish for “a settled, peaceful life that goes on and on.” But once the same days actually do keep repeating, we start to feel, “How boring — I want to do something new.”
-
To change, you have to become unstable
-
But once you’re unstable, intense anxiety comes rushing in
Between the “need for safety” and the “need for adventure,” we are forever swinging back and forth. Seek stability too hard and you stagnate; seek change too hard and fear freezes your feet… What is the key to escaping this endless circle?
The key is the perspective of “I want to grow”
What blows this deadlock open is the wish to grow.
When you focus not on mere “change” (destroying the status quo) but on growth — “I want to be able to do a little more than I could yesterday,” “I want to meet a new version of myself” — anxiety turns into forward-moving energy. The temporary instability that comes with change becomes something you can accept as “growing pains.” If you feel your life has stalled, start by asking yourself: “How do I want to grow?”
2. The conflict between “I want to be like everyone else” and “I want to be a special self”
Between the safety of the group and the loneliness of individuality
The other great conflict lives inside our relationships with other people.
While we wish “not to stand out from those around me” and “to feel safe being the same as everyone else,” deep down an ache for recognition throbs away — “I want to be a special self, unlike anyone else.”
-
Try to become someone special, and a fierce loneliness torments you
-
Avoid the loneliness by joining everyone else, and now you lose sight of “who you are” and feel unfulfilled
Sink into the crowd and your individuality disappears; rise above it and you’re isolated. Plenty of people suffer in this dilemma.
The key is the perspective of “I want to contribute”
What rescues us from this trap of loneliness and conformity is the wish to contribute.
As long as the arrow points back at yourself — “I want to be seen as special” — other people become rivals, or threats, and the loneliness only deepens. But when you shift your weight onto contribution — “with what I have, I want to be useful to the person in front of me, I want to make them happy” — something strange happens.
Acting for someone else’s sake ends up expressing “a value that is yours alone (= a special self),” while at the same time creating warm bonds with others (= the safety of being together with everyone).
In summary: the driving force that turns the gears of your life
Human desires are full of contradictions. We want stability, and we want change. We want to be with everyone, and we want to be special. When you come up against that complicated dilemma, remember this.
-
When you’re caught between stability and change, wish to grow.
-
When you’re caught between conformity and loneliness, wish to contribute.
With just these two compasses, no matter how much your heart is swaying, your life will begin to move forward — surely, and lightly. Today, what “growth” and what “contribution” will you choose?
I hope this piece sits gently alongside you, and becomes the spark for one step toward tomorrow.
