Every morning I do the Wim Hof breathing method.
Researchers once used LSD to explore the deep layers of human consciousness and the treatment of the mind.
But when LSD was restricted, that research stopped, and people began looking for another doorway.
What drew attention then was deep breathing.
By keeping up strong breathing, the state of consciousness can shift without any drug at all, and emotions and memories you don’t normally touch can surface.
Of course, deep breathing and LSD are not the same thing.
The Wim Hof method, too, wasn’t originally a form of depth psychotherapy.
Even so, doing it every morning, the noise in my head quiets down, my senses wake up, and there’s a feeling of going deep inside myself.
Right now, therapeutic research using LSD and the like is moving forward again.
But the thing you can try first is breathing.
Breathing is free, you can do it anytime, and it goes deeper than you think.
The Wim Hof breathing method — it’s good.
IKIGAI spread worldwide because it lets you handle the heavy question “what am I living for?” with one short Japanese word.
There are mainly four reasons behind it:
- More people are seeking meaning and purpose in life rather than “success” or “happiness”
- It got tied to the Okinawan longevity research on “Blue Zones” and was introduced as the secret to living long and happily
- It was diagrammed as four overlapping circles — what you love, what you’re good at, what society needs, and income — which made it easy to share on social media
- Using the Japanese word as-is gives it the same kind of depth as zen or wabi-sabi
That said, the four circles famous overseas are not a diagram of the traditional Japanese “ikigai.”
The Japanese sense of ikigai is much smaller and much freer. It doesn’t have to be work or a mission — family, friends, a hobby, growing plants, something to look forward to tomorrow is fine. In fact, in a Japanese survey, only 31% of people named work as their ikigai.World Economic Forum
What the world is looking for is probably not “great success,” but a reason to get up in the morning.
