This was my notes for today's speech
i-Talk and u-Talk
— The difference in speaking styles that naturally move people’s hearts
When you want to tell someone something.
When you want to ask for a favor.
When you want to share values.
Have you ever thought,
“I explained it properly… but it didn’t get through”?
The cause may not be what you said,
but who the subject of the sentence was.
What Is u-Talk?
First, u-Talk (You-Talk).
This is a way of speaking that makes the other person the subject, such as:
“You should do this.”
“What do you think?”
“You’d better come.”
At first glance, it looks considerate.
But something happens in the listener’s brain.
“I don’t want to be controlled.”
“I feel like I’m being judged.”
“Am I being instructed?”
In other words, the brain goes into defensive mode.
No matter how correct the content is,
if u-Talk continues,
it rarely reaches the other person’s heart.
What Is i-Talk?
On the other hand, i-Talk (I-Talk).
This is a way of speaking that makes yourself the subject:
“I thought this.”
“I felt this way.”
“I really like this.”
Something interesting happens here.
When people hear i-Talk,
it’s said that their awareness of the subject weakens.
In other words,
instead of feeling
“Someone told me this,”
they experience it as
“A thought that arose inside my own mind.”
As a result, their values begin to move naturally.
The Difference Seen in Catchphrases
This difference shows up clearly
in famous slogans.
“Welcome to Yamaguchi.”
This is pure u-Talk.
“You, please come.”
“You, welcome to Yamaguchi.”
It’s not bad,
but there’s a subtle feeling of being asked.
Now how about this?
“Let’s go to Kyoto.”
“Let’s go.”
“I feel like going.”
“For some reason, it’s Kyoto right now.”
No one is ordering you.
And yet—your heart moves.
This is i-Talk.
The moment you hear it,
your brain creates the illusion:
“Ah… maybe I thought that.”
And that’s why
it leads to action.
People Don’t Move by Persuasion
People don’t move
when they’re convinced.
They move
when they feel they decided for themselves.
i-Talk protects the listener’s freedom
and lets them choose from the inside.
u-Talk,
even when correct,
threatens that freedom.
A Small Tip You Can Use Today
When you want to convey something,
try rephrasing it like this:
❌ “You should do this.”
⬇
⭕ “I did this, and it really worked for me.”
❌ “You should come.”
⬇
⭕ “I found myself wanting to go.”
Just changing the subject
completely changes how the listener’s brain responds.
Summary
u-Talk creates defense
i-Talk creates empathy and intrinsic decision-making
People don’t move when controlled
People act when they believe they chose
Change how you speak, and
relationships, work, and sales
become dramatically smoother
Everything that’s happening right now
is exactly the best.
It’s happening
because this timing
was deliberately chosen.
Please receive the message
hidden within it.
