Special Dialogue④:

Claiming that the past doesn't matter at all!

I will break down the flow of the discussion into eight major steps and summarize it in a theoretical and step-by-step manner.

Although it was a lengthy discussion, I’ve compiled the core points for you.

  1. The Relationship Between Coaching and Leadership

Coaching
The key is having the attitude of putting the client’s (consultant’s) “100% priority on their benefit.”
By dedicating yourself selflessly to support the client, unrelated to your own desires or vision, you can draw out great results.
This “unconditional love”-like relationship can sometimes lead to miraculous outcomes.

Leadership
Leadership requires setting goals that go beyond the current situation for the organization or society, and the ability to involve followers in moving forward.
You must have the perspective of leading not only yourself but also many others.
The difference from coaching is “who you prioritize.” Coaches prioritize individuals 100%, while leaders prioritize the organization and followers.

  1. Three Goals: "Abstraction," "Leadership," and "Esotericity (Spirituality)"

For coaching, it’s recommended to address the following three domains when setting goals:

Abstraction
Having a perspective that’s not just about you or your family but about contributing to society or the world at large.
By setting big goals, such as “everyone being full,” you elevate your thinking and perspective.

Leadership
The power to involve followers or communities around you.
You need to show goals that exist beyond the current situation and demonstrate leadership that moves people and gathers them together.

Esotericity (Spirituality)
This covers the realm of "spirituality" or "mental" that is hard to verbalize.
In American culture, like "Help me God," there’s a deep-rooted spiritual element that is accepted and is said to draw out the inherent potential within people.
In Japan, due to incidents like the Aum Shinrikyo and the influence of cults, spirituality has a suspicious impression, so the term “esotericity” is used to avoid this.

  1. Differences Between American Bible Culture and Japanese Culture

America
Bible culture (rooted in the Old Testament) is strong. In events like presidential inaugurations, the Bible is held, and there’s a soil that positively accepts spirituality.
"Help me God" naturally exists, and it’s easier to incorporate spiritual elements into coaching and leadership.

Japan
There’s a strong caution against spirituality due to incidents like the Aum Shinrikyo and cult problems.
As a result, when introducing coaching, using the word “spirituality” openly often leads to misunderstandings, and it has been avoided.
While there is a religious foundation, such as praying to the Jizo (guardian deity), it is hard to approach it in a “business or academic context.”

  1. The Non-Verbal Level Effect of Coaching

When the coach engages 100% with the client, the client feels that “this person might be more of an ally than my own family.”
This “unconditional love”-like relationship can sometimes lead to rapid growth and outcomes that are difficult to achieve through conventional means (non-verbal level of influence).
This can be seen as a kind of “miracle,” but it’s considered the manifestation of human potential that has evolved over time.

  1. Human Evolution and Goals Beyond the Current Situation

For example, like “fish first coming onto land,” even though people say it’s impossible, they believe in something and leap into a new environment.
When the coach continues to believe that “you can do it,” there are examples where people achieve a leap in evolution (from W1 to W2, W3).
This isn’t “God’s power,” but “the evolutionary ability that humans originally possess,” and it’s considered that coaching brings this out.

  1. Self-Analysis Technique: Repeated “Why?” and Counterarguments

Practical method you can use starting today:
Continuously ask yourself, “Why do I want to do this?”
Once you have an answer, think of five counterarguments to challenge that reason.
Then, keep making counterarguments to those responses.
In doing so, you question the thoughts instilled in you from the past or your habits and discover purer motivations or new possibilities.
The attitude of doubting “What I think is good might actually be an external influence” becomes the first step in setting a goal beyond the current situation.

  1. Addiction and the Mechanism of Dopamine

Addiction is caused by the release of dopamine due to “strong stimuli/rewards.” People get hooked on experiences that are more intense than natural pleasures (e.g., hunger, sexual desire).
It used to be believed that “tolerance means becoming numb,” but in reality, people become “more sensitive and begin to detect subtle differences.”
Example: People start noticing the differences between higher-end, more expensive audio equipment or cars, and have an insatiable desire to keep exploring.
When behavior patterns formed in the prefrontal cortex (e.g., glutamate pathways) prevent someone from controlling their actions or desires, it becomes “pathological.” However, if used effectively, it can work positively as a “great sense of curiosity.”

  1. Coach’s Self-Sacrifice and Commitment to the Client

In the speaker’s example, “abstaining from alcohol” helps keep the mind (IQ) clear, maintaining 100% commitment to the client.
Not just the few sessions a month or the minutes of session time, but constantly thinking about the client’s goals in the back of your mind. The attitude of “What can I sacrifice to get results?” is the essential love of a coach.
This extreme “self-sacrifice” attitude becomes an incredibly strong foundation of security and success for the client.

Summary
Coaching involves deeply engaging and prioritizing the client’s benefit 100%, even sacrificing your own self, to bring out results beyond the norm.
Leadership requires setting large goals for organizations and society and moving followers towards those goals.
The three areas of abstraction, leadership, and esotericity (spirituality) are important for setting goals on a higher dimension and drawing out the latent evolutionary power that humans possess.
Spirituality is easily misunderstood in Japan, but it is originally “a mental framework for unlocking human potential,” and it is relatively accepted in American culture.
From a neuroscience perspective, the mechanisms of addiction and strong rewards can greatly alter thinking and behavior. If used in a “positive direction,” human potential can be greatly opened.
The most important thing is to question “Why do I think this?” in order to free yourself from past conditioning. For this, you need to repeat “counterarguments to the reasons” and dismantle and rebuild the essence of your ego.

This concludes the theoretical summary of the content discussed.
