Shōka Sonjuku —the private academy founded and led by Yoshida Shōin.

It produced many of the key figures who fueled the Meiji Restoration,
including Shinsaku Takasugi, Hirobumi Itō, and Aritomo Yamagata.

So much deep learning!

Yoshida Shōin taught that the true purpose of learning is to understand how to live as a human being, placing great importance on each disciple’s personal aspiration (kokorozashi).
He emphasized the unity of knowledge and action (chigō gōitsu), encouraging students to put what they learned into practice; to act with true sincerity (shisei, wholehearted “makoto”) that moves people’s hearts; and to cultivate a broad perspective through hijichōmoku (“ears that hear afar, eyes that see afar”), keeping their vision wide and open to the world.
