September 1st — A New Fiscal Year Has Opened!
Thank you for walking with me again this year.

From this September, a new year begins.
Next September, another year begins.
And the year after that will be the real turning point.

These three years will become some of the most important years of my life.
I’m grateful for the companions who are running alongside me.

     The history of microbiome research is surprisingly long, spanning from the invention of the microscope to modern genomic analysis, with several key turning points along the way. Let’s break it down by era:


    1. The Invention of the Microscope & Discovery of “Invisible Life” (17th Century)

    • Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1670s)
      Using a homemade microscope, he observed “tiny living creatures” in the mouth and in pond water. These were the first recorded microbes.
      At this stage, there was no understanding of the relationship between microbes and disease, nor the role of gut bacteria—only the early idea that “small living things exist inside the body.”


    2. The Era of Germ Theory (19th Century)

    • Louis Pasteur, Robert Koch
      They proved that bacteria cause diseases such as cholera, anthrax, and tuberculosis.
      → In this period, the dominant view was “bad bacteria = cause of disease,” with little thought given to the possibility of microbes as beneficial partners.


    3. Attention to Gut Bacteria & Health (Early 20th Century)

    • Élie Metchnikoff (Nobel Prize-winning immunologist)
      He noticed that Bulgarian centenarians commonly ate yogurt and proposed in 1907 that lactic acid bacteria could slow aging.
      → This was the seed of the “probiotics” concept.
      Around this time, the term gut flora appeared, and discussions began about the importance of symbiotic bacteria for human health.


    4. Advances in DNA & Molecular Biology (Mid–Late 20th Century)

    • 1950s–1980s: With improvements in culturing techniques and molecular biology, specific bacteria such as E. coliand Bifidobacteria were studied in detail.

    • However, only “culturable” bacteria could be analyzed, leaving most gut microbes (which are hard to culture) a mystery.


    5. Metagenomics & the Microbiome Revolution (21st Century)

    • 2000s: With the rise of next-generation sequencing (NGS), scientists could directly analyze microbial DNA without culturing.
      → It was revealed that the human gut hosts over 100 trillion microbes across 1,000+ species.

    • 2007: The Human Microbiome Project (HMP, NIH, USA) was launched to systematically map microbiomes across the body (gut, mouth, skin, etc.).
      → This triggered an explosive expansion in microbiome research.


    6. Current Research Themes (2010s–Present)

    • Disease links: Obesity, diabetes, depression, dementia, autoimmune disorders, cancer immunotherapy.

    How to Elevate Your Self-Image


    1. Cultivate "Awareness"

      • Observe your inner dialogue
        The first step is noticing negative habits like, “I’m no good anyway…”

      • Write down your current self-image
        On paper, list about 10 statements starting with “I am…” to reveal the labels you’ve unconsciously given yourself.


      2. Reframe with Words

      • Refine your self-talk
        When you succeed, say “That’s just like me.” When you don’t, say “That’s not like me.”

      • Use affirmations
        Repeat desired self-images in the present tense, e.g., “I am someone who enjoys challenges,” or “I am a person others can trust.”


      3. Build Evidence Through Action

      • Stack small wins
        Every “I did it!” moment rewrites your self-image at the unconscious level.

      • Play a new role
        Act as if your ideal self were in your shoes. Over time, the “role” becomes part of you.


    4. Make Your Environment an Ally

    • Spend time with positive people
      Borrow the perspective of those who believe in you—it helps you see yourself in a bigger light.

    • Align your space and belongings with your ideal self
      From clothes to your room and desk setup, let your environment remind you daily of who you want to become.


    5. Create “Memories of the Future”

    • Visualize
      Imagine yourself acting as your ideal self, like watching a movie in your mind.

    • Set goals beyond your current reality
      (Similar to Tomabechi’s theory or 10X thinking) — By feeling “it’s already done,” your self-image naturally expands.


    👉 The most powerful method is the trio of Words (self-talk) × Action (small challenges) × Future Image (visualization) — practiced consistently.
