The future of Media through the Lens of the "Garden Model"
1. What’s Happening Now
*We are in the midst of a major media transformation—on a scale comparable to the invention of the printing press.
*Media is shifting from “centralized” formats like newspapers and TV, through the chaos of social media, toward a new form.
2. From Past to Present
The Old Days (Temple Model): Newspapers and TV monopolized information. Only a limited few could broadcast.
The Internet Arrives (Disruption Period): Google and Facebook monopolized advertising, while TV was pressured by streaming.
Now (Chaos Period): Anyone can publish on social media, but platforms (algorithms) still dictate visibility. Extreme opinions and flame wars dominate.
3. The New Form = “The Garden”
A “garden” is a system where creators earn directly and connect with fans on their own terms.
Examples: Substack (newsletters), Patreon (membership), Twitch (live streaming).
In a garden, the foundation is not “ad revenue or algorithms” but the trust relationship with readers and viewers.
4. Real-World Examples
Breaking Points: Independent from major networks → monetized via subscriptions → over 1M viewers.
Caroline Chambers: Cookbook rejected by publishers → built a fanbase on Substack → became a NYT bestseller upon release.
Matt Yglesias: Left a major outlet to start Slow Boring → 200K+ readers and annual revenue of over $1M.
5. Strengths of the Garden Model
Ownership: Creators own their audience connections, free from platform control.
Sustainability: Revenue comes from ongoing trust, not fleeting viral hits.
Resilience: Even if TikTok or Facebook get restricted, strong relationships ensure survival.
6. The Future Gardens Will Bring
From fighting for attention (engagement supremacy) to cultivating relationships (trust and empathy).
A world where niche and diverse voices can thrive.
While some worry about echo chambers, it’s more likely people will freely move between multiple communities.
7. Our Choice
What we subscribe to, share, and give our time to is a “vote” for the culture of the future.
By stepping away from endless scrolling on social media and instead investing in trustworthy creators, we nurture a richer new culture.
👉 In Summary:
The future of media is shifting from algorithm-driven chaos to gardens sustained by trust between people.
And the ones who cultivate these gardens are each of us—through the choice of who we decide to support.
